Sample Project - Going Green in Student Housing

Green Leader: McKenzie Matthews

School: Sample Room Profile

Project Objective: Demonstrate how simple changes in everyday use of energy and management of waste items in Student Housing can benefit the planet.

Project Activities or Steps: 1. Save Energy and Water: Recycle Everything. Try using the dorm kitchen appliances to save energy. If you really need your own refrigerator, use thermoelectric mini refrigerators. Use compact fluorescent light bulbs. Use a power strip and remember to unplug it. If your dorm has air conditioning, try turning it on to cool the room but remember to turn it off when you leave or when you go to bed at night. Take shorter showers. 2. Save Natural Resources: Carry a plastic water bottle, one you can refill time and again. Use organic cotton sheets. Choose biodegradable cleaning products which keep petroleum use to a minimum and minimizes toxins in the environment. Consider using used items when shopping for dorm essentials. Choose a diet based on whole grains, fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, etc. to reduce carbon. Donate your dorm supplies you will not use in the future instead of throwing them away. Limit your use of disposable cups, plates, and paper napkins. Purchase vegetable-based laundry detergent.

Project Resources: Create a system within your dormitory/student housing for donating used, unwanted furniture, supplies, appliances, etc. Have a sale at the beginning of the semester for students to save money and save resources at the same time.

Project Budget: If your dormitory/student housing cannot take part in donation and sale of furniture, try thrift stores.

Time Required: Have an input box on each floor to let people know how you saved money, time, or energy that week. The RA could read them at the end of each week, or post them on the bulletin board for everyone to see.

How This Affects Your Community: Create a bulletin board on each floor of the dormitory/student housing with different "Tips of the Week" on how to go green. It could be "Did you know" statistics, ways to save energy or resources, etc.

Getting Others Involved: Organize residence hall competitions to see who can save the most energy and water.
